My tribute to our Brother Al Toledo – 30 Sept 2011

"One by one they pass away, the Brothers of our adoption, the Companions of our choice. A Brother whose hand we have clasped in the bonds of Fraternal Fellowship is now passing from our sight, and we know that we shall meet him on Earth no more."

At the outset, please accept my apologies for not being here physically tonight. I know that our Brother Al Toledo will understand my previous commitment. I thank Bro Rudy for sharing this to you tonight.

This is my third eulogy this year, I guess the saying that these unfortunate things come in threes. Some people dread giving eulogies & speeches, but I do take the view that it is both an honour & privilege to ask to give a tribute to a loved one. This is especially true to a good person like our Brother Al Toledo.

Brother Al and I have several similarities, I guess that is the reason that Sister Heidi requested me to say a tribute to him: we both come from Cavite, we both worked at TAFE and we are brother Masons.

I call him brother in the truest & sincerest meaning of the word – and he was a brother to me & us all. You’ll see a lot of men here with Square & Compasses – rings, pins, hats, etc. These are Freemasons – his Masonic Brothers; & together with their partners; forms his Masonic family.

For those who does not know of his membership in Freemasonry; Brother Al Toledo was initiated, passed & raised in Gen Emilio Aguinaldo Lodge No 31 in Kawit, Cavite long before he migrated here in Australia. Being a Caviteno, and him proudly telling me that the Lodge is just next door to their house in Kawit; his family has had a long history with Masonry. He’s a member of the Filipino Freemasons Association of NSW for more 15 years; one of the almost original members.

Although not a religion and we don’t have a formula for salvation, Freemasonry asked its adherents to believe in a God; whatever he conceives him to be and the immortality of the soul. That same toleration and respect of other’s people beliefs - whether political or religious, sets it apart from other associations & fraternities. It only asks that you follow what you believe in faithfully, never discuss those beliefs inside the Lodge to prevent animosity among those who believe differently.

Masonry also teaches the tenets of Brotherly love, relief & truth – it teaches a good person to be a better person; a better husband, a better father, a better brother, a better son, a better citizen. By being a better person, it reflects that one forms part of and contributes to a better family and society.

Why I am telling you about this is not to encourage or ask you to become one – as Freemasonry does not solicit membership. It is up to a good man of good repute to apply for membership.

The only reason I am letting you know about these; and they are not secrets & you can Google them; is that this is a part of who Bro Al Toledo is and was to me. He lived that same tenets & philosophies in his short life. I may not know him as his family does. I can only tell you what I know him to be – a good person, a faithful friend, and a true and a worthy Mason. He is slow to anger, and he will get angry at the perceived injustices committed to those he love.

See his pictures in the program, that is his patently original and always smiling face; whether he sees you in the mall, in the streets of Mt Druitt or in the Lodge. With an extended hand he will greet you “How are you? or Kumusta” with that same smile.

Your concern is always his concern. His last words & advice to most of us when we visited him in Mt Druitt Palliative Care is: “God gave us this body to take care of; if you feel anything wrong with your body please have it checked straightaway.”

Bloody very typical of Bro Al, there he lays in bed in pain, thin and frailty and dying and advises you to take care of yourself! This is the Brother Al I know and I am so sure that this is the same Bro Al you all know. As I’ve said before in the last two eulogies I gave; one to a long time friend dying of cancer as well & my 92 year old mother - they are not perfect but they sure do left us with great memories that we have immortalized them not only in our minds but also in our hearts.

I could go on and on talking about Bro Al, but since there is another tribute I would like you to pay tribute to our Brother Al by having your blood tested, do your colonoscopies especially if you are over 50 – which I think most of you are and just listen & respect yours and our bodies – it is a gift from God and we must take care of it. Brother Al wants us to live a little bit longer, happy, healthy and without pain. And that is our Brother Al!

As Gandhi said "Before the throne of the Almighty, man will be judged not by his acts but by his intentions. For God alone reads our hearts."

Remembering the life of Bro Alejandro 'Al' Toledo

March 10, 1947 - September 22, 2011

It is with regret to let you all know that our Bro Alejandro 'Al' Toledo dropped his working tools last 22 September 2011 at Mt Druitt Palliative Care.

Sis Heidi informed us that the viewing will be held at Guardian Funerals, located at the Corner of Sunnyholt Road & First Avenue in Blacktown [walking distance from Blacktown Railway Station]; this Friday, 30 September from 5 to 9 PM.

Funeral Mass the following day, Saturday, 1 October 2011 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Angels, 1 Wellgate Ave (cnr Withers Road) Rouse Hill NSW.

Followed by interment at 12:30 PM at Castlebrook Memorial Park, Windsor Road Rouse Hill NSW.

Followed by lunch at the Toledo residence also in Rouse Hill.

The FilMasons family offer their condolences, prayers & sympathies to Sister Heidi, their children and family.

Bro Al Toledo was initiated, passed & raised at Emilio Aguinaldo Lodge No 31 in Kawit, Cavite and is an affiliate member of Lodge Alpha No 970 in Blacktown NSW under the United Grand Lodge of NSW & ACT.

He was a long time member of FilMasons.

On March 19, Saturday is my mother's 40th day. Mass is at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Underwood Road, Homebush (church where the viewing was held). Lunch follows after the mass.

Big and heartfelt thanks also for the support given to my family during those difficult times.

We are not fine as of yet but the prayers and kind thoughts are giving us strength and comfort.

Eulogy: VWBro Cecilio 'Cecil' Reyes Uy

Family and Friends

Welcome and thank you for your attendance today and joining us to celebrate the life of my Dad, Cecilio.

I’d like to share my memories of Dad.

Dad’s a son of the solid north. Born at Aparri, Cagayan and raised at Tayug, Pangasinan [3 February 1938]. He completed his tertiary education at Far Eastern University majoring in Accounting. He became a Certified Public Accountant and built a successful practice. At the same time, he has a knack for teaching and became a professor at Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the University of Manila.

In his professional life, I think his best achievements include becoming Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Manila. He assumed the role despite of just having a Bachelor Degree. We are very proud of this achievement. This is proof that he’s attained the role purely on merit and skill. He eventually was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree, although, he preferred being a University Dean. He signs his name as Dean Cecilio R Uy to a point that people have mistaken his name to be Dean instead of Cecilio.

Another achievement is on being selected as one of the external auditors for the Philippine Constabulary – Integrated National Police. He would proudly display a sticker of the PC – INP on his jeep or car’s windscreen. Even the traffic police are giving him a military salute as he drove pass.

Personally, he was a great Dad. Growing up was never dull. While we seldom have dinner with him on weeknights, he made a point to dedicate the weekend with us. We used to live in Las Pinas which is between Cavite and Laguna. We have a choice of spending the day at either the beaches of Cavite or the swimming pool resorts of Laguna. He also loved going to fiestas. We’d go to Bulacan for a fiesta among others. I share this love of the fiesta with him. It is the best example of Filipino hospitality. There is nothing better.

A particular good time was when he would pack the family for a road trip back to Tayug, Pangasinan. This is always around the time of All Saints Day in November. He liked going back to Tayug and introducing us to the rest of the family. He never forgot his roots.

Today, we farewell Tayug, Pangasinan’s favourite son.

After school, we normally get picked up by a cousin to get us home. On some occasion, Dad will pick us up and would treat us to a merienda at Max Fried Chicken, at the airplane that’s been converted to a restaurant for some club sandwiches or at some fancy hotel restaurant for cake.

Our home at Las Pinas is a hub on weekends. If we’re not in Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, Tayug or visiting friends for lunch or dinner, Dad liked to entertain guests at home.

Dad is the most welcoming person I know. If he meets a new person, his instinct will tell him that this new person is a potential friend.

We have a long driveway at Las Pinas. Dad will set up a table and chairs at the street end of the driveway. He’ll have a case of beer and whisky. He loved his whisky. The first neighbour to walk pass our driveway is promptly invited for a drink. Next thing you know, the entire street is at our driveway with an impromptu party. The name of the street we used to live in is Tidy Tips. By the end of the party, our place in untidy and the guests are way pass being tipsy.

When we moved to Australia and he still have his accountancy practice back home, this period made him split his time between Sydney and Manila. But he always makes a point to be here with us during Christmas and New Year. During the most important time of the year, he will always be with us, his family.

This is how I remembered him, simply Dad.

Your attendance here is testament to his generosity and friendship to you, his family and friends. He made good friends here and back home. Friends that treated us like family.

It was different here when he first joined us in Sydney. It was so quiet for his liking. But that changed when he made friends with the gang at BM Mount Druitt, with his drinking buddies at the [Blacktown] Workers Club and, most certainly, his Lodge Brothers here in Sydney. Your tribute last night is befitting of your Past Master and Brother and he’d be pleased that you have delivered that honour to him. It is a reflection of the high esteem you hold for my Dad. You made Sydney just like what he’s used to back home.

Thank you for honouring his memory today.

It is with deep regret & sorrow that I inform you of the death of our VWBro Cecilio 'Cecil' Uy in Sydney this 2:30 am [29 Aug 2010] at Westmead Hospital [Sydney] [as relayed by WBro Rey Velez].

He is a member of Araw Lodge No 18 [honorary member of Jacques DeMolay Mem Lodge No 305, GLP]; and in Sydney, a long time member of the Filipino Freemasons Association of NSW Inc [FilMasons Club NSW] and the representative of the Philippine Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay to Australia.

Our deepest condolences & prayers to Sister Rosie and their two children.

Thanks for making yesterday's meeting a great success!

The fellowship was first class, probably second only this year to Bro Butch Canicula's birthday / meeting at their home last January when we all went over the limit! I'm sure your Amasons also enjoyed yourselves, judging from the constant laughter at the Castle Hill Masonic Centre.

Our dinner was also first class - chicharon, roasted peanuts, beer, wine, softdrinks, etc for pica pica, pakbet, tinolang manok, siomai, noodle soup, rice, bagoong, etc for dinner, and assorted cakes for dessert, including a Chinese dessert called 'mochi'. We still have not established the correct pronunciation for this particular delicacy so it will be an agenda item for our next meeting.

We also got through the business meeting, details to be provided by Bro Mario at a later date.

Once again, sincerest thanks from your Sis Marilyn and myself.

Easter Outing: 3-4 April

We will have a joint Easter Outing with Lodge Jose Rizal at the Pilipino Multi-Purpose Centre [MPC] at 80 Grange Ave, Schofields [NSW 2762] this Easter weekend. Our Wor Bro Vince Flores is one of the caretakers here and will welcome you with a barbeque [cost per family is just $20.00]. We are planning to spend the weekend here, arriving on the morning of Sturday, 3rd April and leaving after lunch, Sunday, 4th April. Some might go there for a day and visit.

"The Pilipino MPC is situated in a big acreage with a three (3) bedroom house and meeting room. Please bring tent if you intend to sleep in the backyard, pillows, beddings, etc. or air mattress if sleeping at lounge room. Bedrooms can be shared by ladies. Suggested activities are chess, mahjong, card games, bingo or dominos, please take your family as well as friends." according to WBro Manny Maniago.

William O'laco: RIP 17 March 2010

Good evening to all brothers and sisters.

It is my sad duty to announce that Bro Rudy O'laco's brother, William, passed away yesterday [Wednesday, 17 March] in the Philippines and the viewing is at Malate Church, internment on Sunday, 21 March.

Bro Rudy and Sis Sen will go home tomorrow, Friday 19 March.

Please pray for the eternal repose of William O'laco's soul, and may he rest in peace in the arms of the Creator.

Internment - 20 February 2010 after Church Funeral Rites, Pinegrove Memorial Park, Kington Street [off Great Western Highway], Michinbury NSW 2770.

"While we deplore the loss of our beloved brother, and pay this fraternal tribute to his memory, let us not forget, my brethren, that we, too, are mortal; that our bodies, now so strong and vigorous, must ere long, like his, become tenants of the narrow grave and that our spirits, too, like his, must return to the God who spake them into existence."

If you have missed the January 2010 Regular Meeting at Bro Butch & Sis Gene Canicula's residence in Woodcroft you've missed one of our best meetings to date. What a way to start the New Year!

Frankly it could have been due to the alcohol served, but personally it is the presence of the brethren & their ladies & the tremendous fellowship that followed. The business meeting took only half an hour of the planned "meeting", which started at 3:00 pm and ended at 12 midnight [for some!].

But don't be distressed if you've missed the January meeting, our President, Bro Louie has come up with a great Ladies Night this February 20 at 6:00 pm [7:15 pm booking] at Bay View Hotel's 25th Floor Restaurant [90 William St, Woolloomooloo NSW 2010]. Approximate cost is $50 per person.

16 Jan Monthly Meeting

CONGRATULATIONS!

It seemed it was only yesterday that the first induction we have, held in Blacktown City [Workers] Club was actually 16 years ago. How time flies!

That first induction was a small crowning event for the Filipino Freemasons in NSW. The founding members* did their job so well, opening many fraternal windows with the local Masonic communities-lodges and other appendant bodies; we are even looking forward to a Filipino lodge to be established soon, hopefully.

As in all organization, our club, has its cycle of growth and decay, members demitting and resigning, but we also have new names and youth coming in.

We should never, for a moment, be distracted away from our noble objectives of brotherly love, relief and truth… Keep it alive.

With the election of Bro Louie Reyes as President of "The Club" [aka Filipino Masons Association of NSW, Inc - FilMasons NSW], the club announces its induction of officers this coming fourth Saturday, 26 September 2009, 6:30 PM at Concord RSL & Community Club, Nirranda St, Concord West NSW 2138.

The attire is smart casual [no jeans for gents please, after five for the ladies] and the ladies [The Amasons - Asawa ng Masons] are suggesting a Mediterranean/Middle eastern theme. I am sure there is a surprise number coming from the ladies!

Aside from Bro Louie, Vice President elect is Past President [PP], WBro Romy Nieto, Treasurer is PP Bro Manny Santos and Secretary is PP Bro Mario Baylon Jr. Other appointed officers are yet to be announced by the incoming President.

Lodge Balmain Celebrates 150th Founding: 16 May

Lodge Balmain No 23 [UGL NSW & ACT] will be celebrating it’s 150th founding this Saturday, 16 May at a reconsecration ceremony and banquet at Laurelbank Masonic Centre [87 Penshurst St Willoughby NSW 2068] starting at 4:00 PM.

As one of the oldest lodges in the jurisdiction, Lodge Balmain has its share of other lodges that amalgated with it; like Lodge Waratah-Pacific, which also amalgated with Lodge Pacific and Lodge Biloela in the recent past.

According to a news item by Eleanor Pearson in the Cumberland Courier,

"The lodge was founded by a shipwright at Balmain in 1859 when sailing was the only way to cross the Pacific.

About 40 sea captains have been members and even now membership includes a shipwright and navy personnel.

When the lodge meets each month members toast their seafaring forbears, ring a bell from an old ship, Westralia, and sing a seafaring ditty."

What is spectacular about this farm property is that it is "green", Bro Manny has a 1Kv solar electricity with a back up generator. There is a large rain water tank at the back of the house [not shown in the above photo], a man made dam nearby to take care of the overflow and Bro Manny erected the small water tank, shown above.

Easter 2009 Outing: 11-12 April

WBro Manny Maniago suggested we visit our sick brother, WBro Manny Reyes this Easter to coincide with our Easter Outing at his residence at Parnell Rd Tomerong. Our WBro Manny Reyes gladly accepted to host us at his farm property, and even attended last meeting to confirm the details.

The Easter Outing will be on Saturday and Sunday, 11 to 12 April.

Please bring some linen, food [potluck], drinks [Bro Manny R fav drink!] and if you are camping on his vast property, bring camping gears. As his residence uses solar energy [1KV] and rain water tanks, these will be in limited supply for the numbers of attendees. There is however a gas heater for hot showers and cooking and stores are nearby.

Tomerong is located 15 minutes south of Nowra, follow the Princes Highway, take the Tomerong turnoff and follow the signs. It is about 188 kilometers and 2.5 hours by car from Woodcroft.

WBro Mat, Bro Rick & Sis Gene

It seems bad news come in threes. First, I've learned that Bro Rick has a blood disorder, and then the following day at McDonald's, WBro Mat nonchalantly announced that he will be operated on for colon cancer. When I've visited WBro Mat at the hospital, I've learned from Sis Cora [WBro Mat's better half], that Sis Gene Canicula is also suffering from kidney cancer.

Fortunately for Bro Rick, his PET scan and other tests revealed that his lymphoma is not as serious as first diagnosed. He and his family are taking a well earned rest and recreation in the Philippines as we speak.

With WBro Mat, it is the same, the cancerous colon has been taken off, and photo above shows him [on the left] taking a breather after walking and exercising just a couple of days after he was discharged from the hospital [with Bro Nomy [on the right], a perennial exercise companion at Woodcroft Lakes].

I just hope that with our prayers and well-wishers, Sis Gene will also get better. According to Bro Butch, she still goes to work from time to time and enjoys the visits from her siblings from the US.

While he won't be there since he is on Grand Lodge duty, I will be there early to set up the place. Thanks in advance to Bro Fidel and Sis Pen for graciously hosting this meeting.

Main agenda is the proposed Easter outing at the Reyes' Ranch at Tomerong [WBro Manny "Manoy" and Sis Vivian Reyes retirement house]. This was suggested by WBro Manny Maniago and is scheduled for the weekend of 11-12 April [Saturday and Easter Sunday].

Middle Eastern Night

Brother Vice President Louie called me up to remind me to update and post the Ladies Night pictures. I can understand his eagerness for everyone had a great time, especially and most importantly - our ladies.

I guess the highlight of the night is the belly dance performance of the ladies, after an hour and a half belly dance instruction. Surely, the brethren and the ladies managed to build an appetite for the chicken and beef kebab [shawarma] ordered by Bro Louie and Sis Marilyn.

Above photo shows the brethren taking time out to pose with our invited belly dance instructress. Even Bro Manny P's son, Daniel had a good time with the "oldies" and especially practicing belly dancing with the ladies!

Thank you to Bro Manny and Sis Do for hosting the Ladies Night, and painstakingly decorated their house to suite the Middle Eastern Night; as well as organising the rose flower arrangement and our belly dancer instructress.

Thank you to VP Bro Louie and Sis Marilyn for organising the main meal and all those who brought extra food and drinks.

To those who attended and supported this event, thank you as well. I believe everyone enjoyed the night, which makes organising an event like this theme night a joy.

1. For tonight, Thursday, 18 Dec at Bro Manny and Sis Do Placido for a Christmas Carols practice as organised by Sis Remy (I believe), or just another excuse to meet before Christmas. Please bring desserts or snacks, drinks if you can.

2. Friday, 19 Dec at Oatley Masonic Centre, Letitia Street Oatley. From 7:45 PM, Tyling for lodge meeting at 7:15 pm but will be only of short duration (as promised by VP Bro Louie!).

According to VP and acting President, Bro Louie Reyes the November FilMasons Golf Social and fellowship game will be held Sunday, 30 November at Sefton Golf Course, 160 Rose Street, Sefton. Tee off time is 1 PM, but there is lunch/snack before tee off at 12:30 PM, FilMasons at 11:30 AM as hosts.

According to Bro Louie: "Format is two-man Ambrose best-ball, maximum double-bogey on any hole.

Bro Manny Maniago is chief umpire but I [Bro Louie] will be enacting his decisions since I will not be playing because I will also be organizing the putting/chipping competition for the non-golfers.

Bro Manny Maniago [He] will make the pairings and decide handicaps, assisted by Freddy Ramos and myself.

[I suggest] top three prizes with handicap and top three prizes for scratch scores.

Also, one mystery hole in the front nine and one in the back nine and we will give a prize of a golf ball to each of the pair who score birdie or better on these holes. Ladies all get a prize.

Putting/chipping competition will be free golf balls to the first two places. I haven't really decided on the full format of this one yet because I do not know how many takers there will be for this one.

We are anticipating around five squads of four so we will send three squads off from hole one and the other two from hole ten to move things along faster. There will be four ladies, at most, so they will comprise the sixth squad and will have a competition of their own."

On our last membership meeting in October, VWB Fidel Pamplona, IPP; requested that a letter from Senior Grand Warden Bro Walid Mehanna be read for the benefit of all brethren and ladies present.

Excerpts are as follows:

"In December 2008, the Present and Past Grand Lodge Officers Association of NSW (P&PGLOA) will achieve 100 years and it is proposed to hold a special function to celebrate the occasion, details of which will be advised later.

... a number of important and exciting changes to the Rules of the "Present and Past Grand Lodge Officers Association of NSW"... were approved at the Annual General Meeting of the Association held on Tuesday, 14 August 2008.

Firstly, the Association has a new name which now reflects the fact that membership is no longer restricted to present and past Grand Lodge Officers but is open to all members of the United Grand Lodge of NSW and the ACT.

Of even greater importance... is the fact that membership is now open to the wives, partners and widows of departed Brethren of this jurisdiction. The admission of ladies to our Association supports the Grand Master's stated intention to pay tribute to the women who have supported their men in Freemasonry, to encourage and support the contributions of all women of this Grand Lodge, and to apply their talents for the betterment of Freemasonry in this jurisdiction.

The structure of the Association has also changed and has reverted to that operating prior to 2006. The Senior Grand Warden is again the constitutional President of the Association and the Junior Grand Warden is one of two Vice Presidents. A second Vice President is filled by election.

In an effort to progress the Association and to provide a forum in which members are able to share ideas and to enjoy each others company through social interaction, the Committee of Management will be arranging a number of special functions. It is proposed to continue with the format of the regular luncheon meetings of the Association on the second Tuesday of February, May, August, October and December.

On [the] Tuesday, 11 November 2008, it is proposed to celebrate Remembrance Day with a Special Meeting of the Association at which MW Bro A Lauer APM, PGM, will be the guest speaker. The function will be held at the Sydney Masonic Centre commencing at 6:00 pm for 6:30 PM. Further details will be supplied shortly.

I sincerely hope you will support your Association through your attendance at Association meetings and by encouraging those who are not members of the Association to join."

Barbeque Lunch with the Victorians: Flinders Slopes

After a much needed sleep after the hectic Induction Dinner Dance and a gruelling round of golf, the brethren and ladies met for a barbeque lunch at Flinders Slopes.

Thanks to Bro VP Louie Reyes who woke so early to reserve us a spot, notwithstanding that he was required at work later that day. He, together with Sis Marilyn was also assigned to provide the bread rolls and rice for lunch.

Good thing Bro Treasurer, Manny Santos came early as well to keep him company with the drinks (i.e., wine, beer and spirits). With storm weather forecasted for the weekend, I would not be surprised that these two warmed themselves, not with coffee but with red wine and WBro Bobby Briones’ JW Black Label. We did when I and Sis Irene arrived at about 9:30 AM. We could not wait for our guests to warm ourselves up.

The Victorian FilMasons present were Brothers Roy Esagunde, Chris Esagunde, Totie Mayo, Robert Pido and Greg Todio, our perennial guests from south of the border.

FilMasons NSW on hand were: Bro Louie and Sis Marilyn Reyes, Bro Manny and Sis Odeng Santos (who had lunch with us dashing from work), Bro Romy and Sis Ellen Nieto (who generously prepared the green salads), Bro Fidel and Sis Pen Pamplona (who not only hosted the five visitors but also prepared fruit salad), Bro Manny and Sis Do Placido (who brought in more fruits and cakes), Sis Mila Romerosa and the golfers, Bro Dick Palenzuela, Bro Julian Tan and Mr Joseph Schwarzkopf.

After much banter about the golf game, the brethren and the ladies partook of the barbeque and the sinigang broth with more gulps of wine and Bro Fidel’s brandy and Bro Bobby’s JW.

As per previous post about the golf by Bro Manny Maniago, the prizes were awarded to the winners and to make sure our Victorian brethren does not miss their flight back home, they were taken direct to the airport.

It was another “happy occasion” moments, with lots of pictures and fellowship.

After a late night of dancing from our Induction dinner dance, nine (9) avid golfers anxiously met at Woodville Golf Course , 118 Rawson Rd Guilford on the early hours of 7:00 AM. Tee off time was scheduled at 7:30 AM.

The weather was not so friendly with early showers and overcast. However, as true golfers this atrocious weather did not stop four brethren from Melbourne and five from Sydney in demonstrating their golfing prowess.

Victorian’s team consisted of Brothers Roy Esagunde, Totie Mayo, Rob Pido and Cris Esagunde, and the NSW’s team were Brothers Manny Maniago, Romy Nieto, Dick Palenzuela and Julian Tan. Joseph Schwarzkopf was a late addition to the Sydney team.

This golf game in my mind gave a good opportunity for friendly rivalry and at the same time enjoying the camaraderie and friendship of the brethren. The first group were Brothers Romy, Dick, Cris, and Totie who teed off at 7:45 AM. Then followed by Bros Roy, Manny, Julian and Rob. Just before walking to the first fairway Joseph a supporter of Filmasons joined the group.

Nearest to pin at hole 2 was taken by Bro Dick Palenzuela. Bro Manny Maniago had hole 5 while Bro Roy Esagunde took hole 7. Longest drive was garnered by Bro Romy Nieto at hole 3 while Bro Cris Esagunde had drive and pitch award at hole 4.

In between holes exchanges of jokes can be heard among the group. The "ohs" and "ahs" were mostly heard when a short putt was missed. Fortunately, there were no voices shouting "FORE" as the golf course was nearly deserted. Could have been the weather (which tradition requires us to blame on the visitors, of course!) or attributed to the Daylight Savings Time (DST) clock adjustment?

The first group was finished just before 10:00 AM while the second group completed the nine holes at 10:30 AM. After a few exchanges of jokes and taking the score cards the group proceeded to Flinders Slopes which is just a few minutes from the golf course.

Brothers Fidel Pamplona and Manny Santos were busy cooking the sumptuous barbeque lunch. Bro Manny Santos and Bro Louie went to Flinders Slopes early morning, 6:30 am to be precise, to secure the traditional sheltered tables and barbeque area.

Our heartfelt thanks go to these brothers for having insomnia and getting there early. After the stories and joking around, then came the awarding of trophies. The team winner was Melbourne. The overall champion on the day was awarded to Bro Manny Maniago who carded 12 over par on the nine holes played and Bro Roy Esagunde was the runner up on 14 over par. Bro Rob Pido was awarded the trophy for most improved player.

Golf balls were handed to the others, making sure that everyone was a winner. Of course, the reality is we all enjoyed the camaraderie, friendship and sportsmanship of those who participated in the game we all loved. Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all the brethren and the NSW ladies, the Amasons. Without you all the event would not have been a success. Thanks!

Moderator's Note: It has become a tradition for visiting brethren, whether from interstate or from overseas to have a friendly golf game with the brethren and at times with some of the ladies.

For Fil Masons NSW, this is usually preceded by a party the night or day before and concluded by a barbeque lunch after the game. Induction Dinner Dance Night: 4 Oct

You have to have one of the above tickets to attend and enjoy the FilMasons Induction Dinner Dance.

While the officers for 2008-2009 have already been inducted by no less than the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the Philippines (GLP), MW Bro Pacifico Aniag, this dinner dance is to formally present the new set of officers to the community.

This is one of the very few instances that the induction of officers was held in a private residence. It has been a while since an informal induction of officers was held in the 15 year history of the Club. This was not done to make history, but rather to take advantage of the presence of MW Bro Aniag and his delegation. This was a first in the history of the Club, a sitting GM inducting our officers; also the fact that a past president was “recycled” as President of the Club.

While this was not meant to make history, it did. But the very important aspect was the excellent speech of MW Bro Boy Aniag regarding the theme of his term as GM: Harmony. For those present, it was crystal clear how the GM explained how harmony should work in Masonry. Unfortunately, his speech was extemporaneous and no notes were available. Suffice to say, the induction, while very informal was made very special due to presence and wisdom of the GLP’s GM.

The details of the induction dinner dance: Saturday (long weekend), 4 October 2008 at the Corregidor Entertainment Centre and Restaurant, 122 Rooty Hill Road North, Rooty Hill NSW (across Saint Aidan’s Church). Start time is 6:00 PM for drinks. Attire is semi-formal. There will be very few formalities, and the rest of the evening will be dinner and dancing, to the sound of Del and Bona.

We hope to see there!

Social Golf and Barbeque Lunch at the Park: 27 July

Preparations for the Sunday barbeque and fellowship began at approximately the same time that the golfers teed off at Villawood, if not earlier. Bro Manny Santos was already at Flinders Slopes at 9 am to make sure that the Filmasons had their customary spot, marked off by the Filmasons banner.

VWBro Fidel and Sis Pen Pamplona joined him shortly afterwards and they worked so quickly that by the time the others started arriving they were greeted by delicious smell of cooking sausages and steaks.

The full menu was prawns, steaks, sausages, chicken and fried rice by Sis Ellen; grilled onions, a variety of salads, and chips, all of which could be washed down by a selection of softdrinks, juices, wines, and three bottles of whisky donated by our fearless president. There were also fresh fruits, cakes, and chocolate for desserts. A typical Filmason picnic spread and even after everyone had had their fill, there was still enough left over for take away.

I got the chronology slightly messed up in that the lunch got eaten in two shifts because the golfers arrived about an hour after it was served. Nonetheless, they also had their fill, led by MWBro Aniag and His Excellency, brother Ernesto De Leon, Philippine Ambassador to Australia; who has already been a guest on several occasions at our get-togethers. Bro De Leon had made his way all the way from Canberra to join us for golf and barby and we are most grateful for this, brother ambassador.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in pleasant fellowship – stories on every topic including but not limited to golf and masonry were exchanged among the brethren and sisters, punctuated only by the slight interruption of the record-breaking hail storm at around 3 pm. We were then grateful for Bro Manny Santos’ foresight because we had the best and most protected spot on the grounds and stayed relatively dry throughout the downpour. It was also quite cold but the brethren were fighting it off bravely with liberal doses of Bro Mario’s medicinal whisky. I personally favoured the Johnny Walker Black for this purpose.

We easily outlasted the storm and then, on cue, the paparazzi appeared from nowhere and began their work, as will be evident from the photos accompanying this article. You will agree that just about every angle to photograph the group was used. Then, and this is never my favourite part of any story, it was time to pack up and say our goodbyes.

Everyone who wanted take away got some, except for the whisky. Some of us brought our visiting brethren to their lodgings, some at Bro Ariel Gonzales’ and Bro Joe Diroy’s residences at Campsie and Darling Point, the others to the Masonic Club and Hotel at Castlereagh Street in town; and with this a great day of fellowship had come to a most satisfying end.

Epilogue

At the start of his address, MWBro Aniag thanked the Australian brethren and sisters for making him and his delegation so welcome. At the end of it, he also congratulated them for forming the Filmasons Club. He stated how important it was, particularly in foreign lands, to come together and provide an environment in which we can feel welcome and at home, and through this club, it was possible to do just that.

Finally, he extended an invitation to all present to inform him whenever anyone was going back home for a visit so that they could reciprocate the warmth and hospitality shown them this day; a food for thought for sure.

Official Welcome, Fellowship and Induction of Officers: 26 July

The Apollo Street at Greenfield Park home of Bro Romy and Sis Tessie Bernabe and their family, became the focal point of every brother and sister that evening. The Bernabes’ had very generously offered their home as the venue for the official welcome for GM Aniag and the brethren who accompanied him and for this all were most grateful.

WBro Abe Amores took charge of the official proceedings with some preliminary words of welcome then invited WBro Romy Nieto to lead all in the prayer of thanks which he did in his usual very capable way. Dinner was a traditional barby which included kangaroo steaks specially ordered for the visiting brethren. It was prepared under the supervision of Sis Tess Amores, many thanks for this.

After dinner, Filmason co-founder WBro Mat Armonio introduced our honoured guest in his usual inimitable style. MW Bro Pacifico Aniag was then invited to take the floor and address everyone assembled.

What followed was a tour de force by the head of Philippine masonry as he revealed and expounded on the theme of his term as grandmaster – Harmony. He used the example of a choir to develop his idea – many different and differing voices crafted to produce one harmonious sound, each member of the choir primarily charged with listening to those on their left and right and then singing so as to blend with them, subjugating individual voices to that of the group.

According to GM Aniag, Masonry is no different. It accepts men of the widest variety of races, backgrounds, and beliefs into its fold and then teaches them to concern themselves primarily with the needs and wants of those around them. The grandmaster stressed that unity of such a diverse group of men is very difficult, if not impossible, a pipe dream, unless harmony is first achieved.

I believe that all were touched by his oration and it was made amply clear to all why he is the grandmaster.

The official proceedings continued with outgoing president VWBro Fidel Pamplona sharing his final thoughts with his fellow Filmasons followed by the induction of the Filmason officers for 2008-2009 by MW Bro Aniag. Incoming president Mario Baylon Jr led his officers in taking the oath administered by the grandmaster and then the paparazzi closed in again, led by our official photographer Bro Ray Moncay who coordinated and choreographed the photos throughout the evening.

Newly-inducted president Bro Baylon shared his vision for the club for the coming year, saying that he would use a back-to-basics approach, reducing the number of business meetings and increasing the number of fellowships and socials, and also putting some emphasis on the charitable aspect of the fraternity on which the club is founded.

The guests were then presented with several gifts of welcome which included masonic banners from WB Amores, boomerang key rings, and an Aboriginal boomerang and mount for MW Bro Aniag as well. More group photos, including photos of the paparazzi at their work, an idea of Bro Ray. We were then entertained by a musical number from Jasmin, the granddaughter of Bro Romy and Sis Tessie, and she sang beautifully indeed.

The official proceedings having drawn to a close, the brethren and sisters resumed the fellowship that masonic gatherings are known for and this could easily have gone on all night but did not because there was a golf tournament and barby scheduled for the next day and the visitors were still to get some real rest from their trip.

Arrival - Sydney, Saturday, 26 July

Even as Philippine Airlines flight PR209, bearing Grand Master (GM) MW Bro Pacifico Aniag of the Grand Lodge of the Philippines (GLP) and his delegation, landed at Tullamarine airport in Melbourne and became PR210 for the return flight to Manila via Sydney, the elements of his welcoming party were already converging on Kingsford-Smith airport via various routes.

Keen eyes scanned the arrival information on the internet and on the flight information board until finally PR210 status turned “landed” at Sydney. The brethren and sisters took up their stations at Arrival Gates A & B and unfurled posters and banners of welcome for the visitors who emerged in due course, led by the GM himself.

Many words and handshakes of welcome were exchanged and the sisters, led by Sis Connie Angeles added their own touch with garlands of flowers for the visiting brethren and a full bouquet for the GM as well.

FilMasons NSW contigent was led by VWBro President Fidel Pamplona, Vice-President Bro Louie Reyes, Treasurer, Bro Manny Santos and Past Presidents VWBro Manny Maniago, WBro Abe Amores, WBro Romy Nieto and Bro Mario Baylon Jr. Also on hand are Bro Ved Reyes, WBro Zaldy and Sis Connie Angeles, WBro Leo Bautista, WBro Hermie Mateo, WBro Manny Reyes, Bro Edwin Balasa, Bro Al Toledo and Bro Bert Dooma.

Also present were WBro Jun Capili, organised for some of the welcome banners, flowers, and car stickers on his own volition and Bro Ariel Gonzales and Bro Joe Diroy; who volunteered to billet some of our visitors in their residences, as well as providing some of the vehicles to ferry the delegation.

The paparazzi did their work outside and there were at least a hundred group shots taken, I kid you not! The general public must have been wondering what celebrity had arrived. The visitors and their luggage were then efficiently whisked away to a yum cha lunch at Canterbury Bulldogs Club at Belmore.

First Tracing Board Explained: 15 Aug

The Filipino Freemasons of Victoria recently anounced their FFV President's Cup 2008 to be held at Eynesbury Golf Club, Eynesbury Road, Eynesbury, Victoria this coming 28 September 2008.

This is an 18-hole individual stroke golf championship with an open gross and net winners for the major events. There is also an A, B, C and social grade events. Tee-off time is 7:00 AM with an event fee of $100.00; which includes green fee, golf cart, light breakfast and lunch and beverages.

The June Quarterly Communication of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales & Australian Capital Territoty (UGL NSW & ACT) held on Wednesday, 11 June 2008, at the Grand Lodge, Sydney Masonic Centre, saw the preferment of three of our brother Filmasons as Grand Officers.

VWB Fidel Pamplona, Deputy Grand Pursuivant, was appointed as Grand Standard Bearer.

VWB Manny Maniago, DGIW of District 28, was elected as Grand Pursuivant.

VWB Zaldy Angeles, Grand Steward, was elected as Deputy Grand Pursuivant.

The positions of Grand Pursuivant and Deputy Grand Pursuivant were decided by ballot on the night and our brethren came through with flying colours.

These brethren, along with RWB Rey Porras, PJGW, (now Regional Grand Counsellor, Region 11 and a District Commander and a 33rd degree Sovereign Grand Inspector General (SGIG) of the The Supreme Council 33rd deg of the Ancient and Accepted Rite of Australia) are all veteran members of the UGL NSW & ACT's Ceremonial Team and their elections are a measure of the regard and respect in which they are held by the brethren in general and particularly those in Grand office.

Please do not fail to congratulate them when next you meet them for they represent us as Filmasons in Grand Lodge and throughout the jurisdiction and wherever else their duties may take them.

The colors unfurled before you represent the national banner of our country - the Philippines.

It stands for a people, united with every element forming an integral whole, a geographical territory without dismemberment - a republic, democratic, free and independent.

It is an emblem of our national freedom, the incarnation and inspiration of all that is dear and noble in Philippine life.

Wrought by the mighty hands of ages, born of a liberty-loving people and led by the guiding spirit of the destinies of nations.

It is the landmark of our national patrimony and the living symbol of our birthright.

In its name history records the founding and building of the nation.

Its zeal shall live till the end of time and its ideals shall cease only when nations and races are no more.

The Sun is an emblem of the eternal life of the nation and a symbol of the perpetual life that guards the destiny of our race.

VIC INDUCTION: A CROWNING GLORY

Sunday, 8 June 2008 – GOLF & BARBY DAY

In what is almost certainly going to become a tradition, the day after the induction is for the golf match followed by barby (barbeque). The venue for the match was the Altona Golf Club because several of the brothers are members and regulars there.

The day was another beautiful and sunny Melbourne day and a total of fourteen players, eight from Victoria and six from New South Wales, took on the challenging course, albeit for only nine holes due to the late tee off of 9 am. The brethren were once again the perfect hosts, providing us with all the equipment we needed, and even coffee before tee off.

Allow me to say up front that our Victorian brethren are excellent players and we have much to learn from them. No excuses though, because we tried our best but they are streets ahead in golf skill. I, for example, was in the last squad to tee off, with Bro Roy, Sis Do, and Bro Manny Placido, and it quickly turned into a clinic by Bro Roy for us. Thank you very much for your valuable lessons and your patience, bro! Nonetheless, there were some high points for us as well. Our hosts were all praise for Sis Do’s style and were even willing to bet on her against some other ladies on the course.

At the end of the match, we all gathered at the car park around 1130 am for some photos before joining the others at Western Masonic Hall for the barbeque and fellowship.

The banquet was ready and waiting for us by the time we got to the lodge at Sunshine and we joined the others in enjoying the delicious food. WBro Reg De Leon was chief chef, ably assisted by the others brthren. Once again, there was plenty of softdrink, wine, beer, and even some cognac to help with digestion. The only minus for me was that Marilyn got sick with flu and was unable to join us in the celebration.

There is also no such thing as a Filipino get-together without karaoke and that had already been set up and was used constantly after lunch. Lunch is always a noisy and happy affair for Filipinos and the NSW contingent, though smaller in number, had no problem contributing to the general happiness and celebration going on throughout.

The Victorians had organized trophies for the golf match and first up were the Class C or rookie prizes which were won by Bro Cesar Solis, 1st placer; Bro Toti Mayo and Bro Bong Flores, runner ups; all of Victoria which was no surprise.

Sis Do deservedly got the encouragement award because her style is very good and she will improve very quickly. Much more surprising was the overall trophy which they awarded to NSW. Either they don’t know how to add or we don’t know how to count strokes. Either way, we decided to regard it as a "friendship trophy" and promised them that we would try harder when they came to visit us for our induction.

Kidding aside, it was a beautiful gesture on their part, and Bro Manny Placido was inspired to say "thank you" on our behalf by leading the sisters in an energetic rendition of Hurts So Good which got everybody to either join in the singing or to get up and dance.

Then, Sis Remy informed us that the Placidos’ had just celebrated their wedding anniversary and that meant, of course, a love song by them. They sang their favourite song, Endless Love, so beautifully that several of the brethren proposed to Bro Manny right then and there.

More songs and dancing followed, and a very fair raffle as well wherein NSW FilMasons was allowed to win a prize. Just kidding! This all added to the wonderful atmosphere which had taken over the banquet hall of the lodge.

Some of us were taken on a tour of the lodge rooms which are very beautifully laid out and furnished and we had to say that this was one of the best lodges we had ever seen, a true temple of Freemasonry.

It could have gone on for a long time yet, but this is where my part of the story ends because we had an 8 pm flight to catch at Tullamarine, so at a little past 3 pm, I began the sad task of saying farewell to all my Victorian brothers and sisters. It seemed to take a long time. Bro Fidel and sis Hilda, wonderful couple that they are; brought me to my home yet again and I will never forget their kindness.

What do you say to people who had given their all and then some to make our visit a most wonderful experience? I’m sure I speak for all of the visitors when I say that this was easily one of the high points of our lives, and we mean it. There is now a new definition for mason in the dictionary – "Victorian Filmasons". And a whole new meaning to our famous Filipino hospitality - "door to door hospitality" Victorian FilMasons style!

Saturday dawned fairly clear, and the first rays of morning welcomed the next set of travellers – WBro Rudy and Sis Mila and WBro Romy and Sis Ellen to sunny Melbourne. Bro Roy was once again on hand to convey them from the airport to their lodgings and one could not hope for a better welcoming committee as our Victorian brethren provided. The Placidos’ and Robisos’ were still in transit but would join us later that afternoon.

The Victorian brothers and sisters still had plenty of work to do preparing for the evening and how they were able to fit us in to an already exhausting schedule is a story on its own. Suffice it to say that they did and we were in for a truly brilliant night.

As if they could not spoil their visitors any further, the VIC Filmasons provided limousine service for those of us billeted in the city all the way to the Polish Hall at Ardeer. I have to say that the Hall has probably never looked as good as it did on the evening of 7 June 2008. They had done a truly splendid job of preparing the venue to suit the auspiciousness of the occasion. The Grandmaster of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria and his wife were present, eloquent testimony of the esteem in which our Victorian brethren are held by the craft. The other 170 or more in attendance were a similar tribute to them as well.

The joint emcees, Sis Rowena Cazar and Bro Jun Dela Cruz, got the evening off to a great start by asking everyone to rise for the national anthems of the Philippines and Australia, underscoring the traditional friendship which exists between these two countries. Incoming president Bro Roy then delivered a very well-worded welcome speech which also outlined what the evening was all about. This was immediately followed by dinner which consisted of an enormous buffet with plenty of choices for all. I was having a bout of upset stomach so I just consoled myself with the wine and cognac which the Victorians so generously provided for medicinal purposes.

Dinner lasted about an hour after which they smoothly moved on to the evening’s formalities which included:

- Speech by VWBro Fidel Pamplona, FilMasons NSW President, followed by presentation of the friendship shield to incoming president Bro Roy Esagunde.

- Induction of new VIC Filmason members by Bro Fidel Pamplona.

- Induction of VIC Filmason officers by MWBro Grandmaster Gary Sebo, United Grand Lodge of Victoria.

- Address by MWBro Grandmaster Gary Sebo.

The Amasons then took to the floor for the first of their two items, the Timawa, a Filipino cultural dance with distinct Spanish influences. Their beautiful costumes and intricate and skilful choreography were an instant hit with the audience and they were rewarded with loud applause at the conclusion of the number.

Several generous prizes were awarded to lucky guests during the raffle, and then the Amasons continued the program with their second item, the Pandango Sa Ilaw. This is a very delicate choreography performed with lit candles in little glasses held by the dancers throughout and in dimmed light to accentuate the effect of the candles. Once again the Amasons held the audience spellbound with their graceful moves and the acclaim at the finish was no less enthusiastic.

The rest of the evening was marked by dancing and fellowship, endless photos and stories, and bottomless softdrinks and wine. I have to comment at this point that the Polish Hall is managed by the very ever helpful Polish people (surprised?); who were assisting throughout the evening in every aspect, including cleaning up in the kitchen, and they shared with us that they had also enjoyed the entertainment and the music. No mistaking, our Victorian brothers and sisters know how to party and they gave their guests as much as they could handle, and then some.

When it was finally over (we only had the hall until midnight) and everything had been put away, the traditional long goodbyes and good nights began. A thick Melbourne fog had descended on the area, as though drawing the curtain on a truly great night. There was, of course, more to come next day, but we were all willing to leave that for tomorrow. The "limos" took the others back to the city while Bro Fidel and Sis Hilda once again very kindly brought us home.

Prologue: Thursday, 5 June 2008 - ARRIVALS

In response to the very cordial invitation of their Victorian Filmason brethren, fourteen of the NSW brothers and sisters boarded plane, train, and automobile (figuratively speaking) to be part of their induction scheduled for the Queen’s birthday long weekend, 6 to 8 June 2008.

The delegation included FilMason's President, VWBro Fidel and Sis Pen Pamplona, VWBro Manny and Sis Remy Maniago, Bro Manny and Sis Do Placido, WBro Romy and Sis Ellen Nieto, WBro Rudy and Sis Mila Romerosa, Bro Ted and Sis Evie Robiso, and Bro Louie and Sis Marilyn Reyes. We all knew that it was going to be a great event. What we didn’t anticipate was just how great it would be.

The long weekend really began on Thursday, 5 June, with the arrival of the first of the NSW contingent at Tullamarine airport. President-elect Bro Roy Esagunde personally met the Reyes’ and brought them safely to their host, a sign of things to come and just what the Victorians meant by hospitality: "door to door hospitality".

Friday, 6 June 2008 – LODGE & CASINO VISIT

The following morning brought in the second wave from the north, consisting of the Pamplonas’ and Maniagos’ and it was Bro Greg Todio who did the meet and greet, along with lunch and fellowship at his home before taking them to their accommodation in the city.

After a bit of time for rest and unpacking, we all met in the city for the first organized events. Bro Greg took us to Lodge Civil Service 338 to visit and watch a live second degree, this will be covered in a separate article. Suffice it to say that the brethren of Lodge Civil Service were most appreciative of the visit and presented us with small souvenirs of the evening.

Another group headed by Bro Fidel and Sis Hilda and Bro Noling and Sis Delia took Sis Remy, Sis Pen, and Sis Marilyn to Crown Casino for dinner and other entertainments such as are on offer at the premises. The brethren joined them a little later on after the lodge meeting and the fellowship continued at one of the cake and coffee outlets, of which there must be thousands at Crown Casino. I exaggerate of course, but let me say right now that night and day become one at the Casino and there is wall-to-wall everything there. The place was absolutely packed and VWBro Fidel P and VWBro Manny M had reason to comment that it was as near to Las Vegas as one could get without leaving Australia. The group were almost reluctant to part ways for the "evening" but next day was the big day and there was still work to be done.

As per meeting last 24 May, it was agreed by those present that the stated monthly meeting and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association be held on Saturday, 21 June at 5:00 PM at the Blacktown Masonic Centre, corner First and Boys Avenues, Blacktown (next to the Blacktown Railway Station).

This monthly meeting is important to the association as it is the election of a new set of officers for the incoming term 2008-2009.

Historically this is a two part meeting, one is the June monthly meeting and the important part is the AGM; wherein the annual financial report by the Treasurer, the Secretary and the President's reports and election of officers are dealt with.

It is therefore requested that everyone attend this meeting to signify your support for the association.

Amasons Give Gala Performance at Pole Depot By Bro Louie Reyes

The Amasons and the Filmasons young ladies (daughters of Filmasons members) stole the show at the Pole Depot Gala and Fete last Saturday, 24 May, at Penshurst, with a fabulous performance of the Pandango Sa Ilaw, a Filipino cultural dance.

Arrayed in the usual resplendent costumes prepared by Sis Odeng Santos, the ladies (Sis Dodo Placido, Sis Marilyn Reyes, Ms Rosanna Placido, Ms Roxanne Romerosa, Ms Ruby Robiso, and Ms Louise Reyes) easily won over the audience with the ease and grace with which they executed the intricate choreography of Sis Dodo Placido.

The audience were among those who were taking pictures of the dancers at the end of the dance and some of the girls were even interviewed after the performance by a reporter from the St. George Leader, the local community paper.

VWBro Fidel and Sis Pen Pamplona, WBro Rudy Romerosa, VWBro Manny Maniago, and Bro Gerry Reyes, Bro Louie Reyes and son, Mr Mark Reyes were also present to give moral support, a helping hand where needed, and acted as the official photographers and movie recordists for the occasion.

The organizers were already talking to our officers about next year’s performance which is a strong vote of confidence for the Amasons, and bodes well for the young ladies who joined them this year.

The group then headed to VWBro Manny and Sis Remy Maniago's home for lunch, meeting and fellowship.

Aside form the initial group, present at the meeting were Bro Mario & Sis Irene Baylon, Sis Remy Maniago, Sis Evelyn Robiso, Secretary Bro Dan Elizes, Bro Jun Capili, the incoming Worshipful Master of Lodge of Sydney No 11 (Installation 18 June 2008), Bro Ariel Gonzales and Bro Joe Deroy.

After the meeting, WBro Manny Reyes called to tele-conference and to personally thanked the brethren and the ladies for their support and prayers on his recent hospitalization. He said that there is a delegation of FilMasons brethren and former workmates from Subic Naval Base Facility right there visiting him.

Also VWBro Ray (also on the phone with WBro Manny) and Sis Madelene Porras will be attending a Debutantes Ball to be held at Nowra RSL on Saturday, 24 May. This ball is being organised by Masons of District 113 and Hands Across NSW, and they took the opportunity to visit WBro Manny and Sis Vivian Reyes. The way WBro Manoy spoke, it sounds all's well.

The FilMasons recently was in receipt of a set of these exemplification/ritual team costumes from Bro Manny and Sis Odeng Santos. The Santos's purchased the same from the Philippines on behalf of the club and hand carried the set as well.

Bro Manny Santos is again suffering from gout, while WBro Manny Reyes is still recuperating in the hospital.

While the ladies present for dance practice for the Pole Depot and FilMason Victoria Induction presentations are Sis Pen Pamplona, Ms Roxanne Romerosa, Sis Evelyn Robiso and daughter, Sis Marilyn Reyes and daughter, Sis Remy Maniago, Sis Odeng Santos, Sis Dodo and daughter, Rosanna Placido.

As usual there were plenty of food and drinks to go around and warm fellowship throuthout the night.

Sis Mila's Sister, Ely Passed Away, 17 May 2008:

WBro Rudy Romerosa relayed the sad news of the passing of Sis Mila's sister, Ely:

"Mila's sister, Ely passed away last Thursday, 15 May 2008 in a hospital in Baguio City. Mila flew to the Philippines yesterday morning, Saturday, 17 May 2008. Took a long trip to Candon City, Ilocos Sur, only to be caught by the big typhoon that is battering Ilocos region at the moment and was stranded somewhere in La Union as the road going to Ilocos Sur was blocked by falling trees and landslides. She finally reached her destination after a long and tiring journey and horrible experience this afternoon, Sunday, 18 May 2008."

Our deepest condolences to Sis Mila and her family. Our prayers are with them in this sad moment.

Ryde Masonic Centre Celebrates its Centenary: 17 May 2008

"The centenary of the Ryde Masonic Centre will be celebrated this Saturday (17 May) at the building (pictured above), 142 Blaxland Road Ryde.

From 9am to 3pm, there’ll be an exhibition of Masonic artefacts and tours of the Lodge room, and a display by the Ryde District Historical Society and Family History Study Group, the teachers of Ryde Gymbaroo Centre, Masonic charities and others.

Unveiling of the plaque to commemorate 100 years of the setting of the original foundation stone on May 16 1908, will start from 5pm.

Lodge Horace Thompson Ryde, formerly Lodge Star of Eastwood was consecrated on March 31, 1885 and had several meeting places before the Ryde Masonic Centre was built.

Only three meetings March, April and June 1885, were held in a room at Moores Eastwood Hotel. In May 1885 the lodge held one meeting at Free-masons Hall, York Street, Sydney.

In July 1885 the lodge moved to the Odd Fellows Hall in Church Street, Ryde and met there until September 11, 1889.

It then met in a corrugated iron building built (for £40) adjacent to the Ryde Railway Station, now West Ryde Station. A Mrs Darvall had given the land to the lodge. On May 7, 1890 a letter was received from Mrs Darvall’s solicitor claiming £20 for two cows that had been killed by trains due to negligence of lodge members.

It appears that they left the station gates open allowing her cows to wander. Perhaps this was due to late night drinking, but the bill was paid anyway.

In 1898 the Lodge moved to Ryde Town Hall until August 1903.

In 1902 the Lodge bought this block of land with the view to building a Masonic building. In April 1907 a committee was formed to consider the advisability of erecting a Masonic hall and conveniences; on February 3, 1908 it was recommended that the sketch plans be approved and a voluntary subscription to raise money for the building.

On the March 5, 1908 a tender of £671 was accepted, which was later increased to £721. The foundation stone was laid on May 16, 1908 by the Most Worshipful the Grand Master, His Excellency, Admiral Sir Harry H Rawson GCB, Governor of New South Wales.

The building was dedicated on September 8, 1908, and the Lodge has met there monthly except for two short periods during the Spanish flu epidemics of 1918 when all public buildings were closed.

By 1921 the Lodge and supper rooms were providing inadequate for the numbers attending special meetings and social events. By 1923 it was decided not to alter the building but build a new Masonic Hall on a new site. The Lodge bought land on the corner of Parkes St (now Blaxland Road) and Argyle Avenue.

In 1925 the building committee submitted a report suggesting that the new venue be scraped and that the existing building be extended to accommodate a new Lodge and supper rooms. The cost was £2,350.

On August 10, 1926 the new Lodge room was dedicated and that is where the Lodge meets today.

The extension was modern for its time having mechanical ventilation and electric lighting; the 1908 building was gas lit. With the larger hall and a stage, the Ryde Masonic Centre then became the social hub of the Ryde district. There were dances on a regular basis and it was a popular wedding reception venue.

The Ryde Masonic Centre still serves the community today in many ways."

Close Call: WBro Manny "Manoy" Reyes

Everyone has heard of the upsetting news regarding our WBro Manny Reyes, who suffered a stroke last week. According to Sis Vivian he is well but requires theraphy at the Shoalhaven District Hospital in Nowra.

Last Saturday, 10 May, WBro Ted and Sis Lourdes Balgos drove to Nowra and visited WBro Manny and Sis Vivian.

According to Bro Bert Dooma, "Just spoke with Manoy. Still at Shoalhaven Hospital at Nowra. Sis Vivian and family were there."

"At the time he (WBro Manny) was having a shower "with the nurse"(according to him) and requests that visitors refrain from visiting him at the hospital; just in case someone (might) offer him a drink as it is a gross hospital rule violation."

"He might be there for another week for theraphy sessions. As usual, our conversation though short (he's in the shower, remember?) was a jovial one. He extends his greetings specially to mothers-sisters this Mothers Day."

According to WBro Nep Reyes, WBro Manny needs theraphy to regain the use of half his body.

All we can do at this stage is to pray for WBro Manny's full recovery and to give strength to Sis Vivian and their family at this difficult time.

Taking care of ourselves:

Reminder to all, especially to our Brethren who does not particularly like to have medical check ups; to visit your doctor regularly and have those medical tests as suggested by your medical practitioner.

It is so much easier to catch whatever ails us and "nip them in the bud" rather than think they will go away.

Keep taking your diabetic, high blood pressure and other medications, unless instructed to stop by your doctors. Anecdotal evidence suggests that stopping high blood pressure medication, without close consultation with your doctor can and do trigger stroke.

Please take care of yourselves, not only for your sake but especially for the sake of your love ones. See you all in our next Monthly Meeting, 24 May.

Jose Berroya Sr Passed Away: 6 May

It is with deep sadness to inform everyone that (Sis) Tessie’s father – Jose Berroya Sr. – passed away this morning (May 6) at their family residence in San Pedro, Laguna.

Her two brothers and her younger sister will fly home (in the Philippines) within the next few days for my father in law’s funeral.

This will be at the Pole Depot Neighbourhood Centre situated in the heart of the St. George area at 23 St. Georges Road, Penshurst. As the name implies, Pole Depot is a neighbourhood centre that caters the St George area, from child minding services to migrant support. Click here for more info.

May Monthly Membership Meeting: 24 May, 1:00 PM at The Maniago's Residence

To coincide with the Pole Depot presentation, the monthly membership meeting for 24 May will be right after the Pole Depot presentation at VWBro Manny and Sis Remy Maniago's house. This is just a short drive from the Pole Depot venue.

This is a "special" and important meeting in the sense that this will be the nomination meeting for the new set of officers for year 2007-2008. Please lend your support to the club by attending this meeting and fellowship.

The Vice-President, Bro Louie Reyes, who coordinates the "south" of the meeting requests that you bring a plate of dish or finger food and your favourite drinks to share. This is not compulsory, and from experience we usually have a lot of food and drinks around. So please don't let this prevent you from having fellowship with the brethren and ladies. Your presence is very important.

Filipino-Australian Military Marches at ANZAC Parade

If you happen to live in the Blacktown (Western Suburbs) area, you must have seen the 30 April issue of the Blacktown Advocate. Pictured prominently are Filipino-Australian military, who also happens to be Freemasons, Bro Rick Palenzuela (retired) and FC Bro Tom Baena.

Also FilMasons retired Philippine military are former FilMason President, Bro Tony Subijano, WBro Rudy Romerosa, Bro Jun Capili and FC Bro Carl "Samboy" Bucoy. Not to mention the current Philippine Ambassador to Australia, H. E., Bro Ernesto H. De Leon.

Brother Jun Capili, whom everyone remembers; is a former member of the Filipino Freemasons (Club) Association of NSW Inc. A businessman, he pursued business interests in the Philippines together with his then young family, hence his resignation from the Club. He and his family came back to Australia and became active at The United Lodge of Sydney No 11.

FilMasons Victoria: Induction of Officers: 7 June 2008

In a letter dated 10 April, the Filipino Freemasons Association of Victoria Inc. wrote:

"Fraternal greetings to all the brethren and families.

The Filipino Freemasons Association of Victoria Inc. wishes to invite all the brethren and the ladies of Filipino Freemasons Association of NSW to our Induction of Officers on June 7, 2008 Saturday at 6:00 PM at Polish Hall, 6 Helene Street, Ardeer, Victoria 3020.

The attire is formal and the cost per head is $30.00."

Worshipful Brother Fidel Oray, the current secretary of FilMasons Victoria also invited the Amasons (Asawa ng Mason, Wives of Masons) to present a dance number on the evening as part of the programme.

There is also a proposed golf activity on Sunday, June 8 at 7:00 AM; the day following the induction and followed by a barbeque lunch.

At the last April Monthly Meeting, the President, VWBro Fidel Pamplona endorsed the invitation and a number of brethren assured their attendance at said Induction of Officers.

The Filipino Freemasons Association of Victoria, while similar in nature to the FilMasons Association of NSW; is an independent association of Filipino Freemasons in the state of Victoria. It is a sister association of FilMasons NSW and have been in contact and fellowship for more than a decade. The first contact of which was during the fifth anniversary and founding celebration of FilMasons NSW in 1996.

April Monthly Meeting: 13 April Sunday

As per President, VWBro Fidel Pamplona invites everyone to the April Monthly Meeting of the Club at 5:00 PM (or earlier for those who wish to listen to the piano bar, etc.) at Dooleys Catholic Club at Lidcombe.

For those who have not had the chance to attend one of our functions at Dooleys, it is located near the Lidcombe train station. The nearest corner is John and Church Streets, and the car park entrance is at Church Street. There is another new underground car park at the John St entrance.

Other News: Bon Voyage, Happy Birthdays and Welcome Back!

Sister Nanette Briones will be flying to Hawaii for a much earned holiday and bonding with her sisters.

Bro Manny and Sis Odeng Santos will also be flying back to Manila.

While, via email; Sis Elsa Arreza said she's in Cebu (I believe with Bro George) for a well-earned break.

Welcome back WBro Abe Amores, from Manila. He attended a school reunion and while was there also visited the wake of Sis Milabel's dad, Mr Pablo Mejia.

Also back is Bro Fred Sese, and also left again for a business trip to the Philippines.

Back also is Bro Ved and Sis Ruth Reyes, who just came back just last week. Bro Ved attended his high school reunion and a relative's wedding.

Happy Birthday to those who celebrate their birthday this month, (I am sorry I don't have the list with me). But notable is WBro Ted Balgos, who celebrated his 70th birthday this month.

Cedars Lodge Consecration: From A Fellowcraft's Eyes by Bro Gerry Reyes

The following is a narration of the historic consecration of Cedars Lodge No 1041 last 29 March. According to Bro Louie Reyes, also the elder blood brother of the author; Bro Gerry, the officers of the new lodge had to sit in the tessalated part of the lodge. According to Bro Louie, the attendance is not fewer that 250 Masons!

Here is Bro Gerry's personal account of the ceremonial part of the consecration:

"Last Saturday the 29th of March 2008 I witnessed an event that most Freemasons witness well into their journey in the craft, being in the craft for only 4 months this was truly an opportunity not to be missed. The event was the consecration of The Cedars Lodge No. 1041.

The afternoon started off rather normally. Brother Roland and I were searching for a parking spot which was a fair distance from the lodge. This was a sign of things to come for I have never seen so many Freemasons in one area outside of Grand Lodge.

Upon entering the lodge we were welcomed warmly by brothers we have never met. As the time came closer for the ceremony I was most surprised when our group (Bro Roland, Bro Manny and Bro Rudy and I) was approached by RT Wor. Bro Dr. Gregory Henry Levenston. He welcomed us and shook our hands and mentioned he was glad to see us there. We had a brief chat about his upcoming grand installation and he said he was looking forward to seeing us there and hoped we could make the event.

The Ceremony was quite spectacular. Witnessing the Grand Lodge Ceremonial team and Officers up close go thru their paces is a sight to see. It inspires newcomers like me to continue my studies and advance in the knowledge of the craft. The Ceremony proper itself was full of symbolisms such as the Corn, Wine, Oil and Salt. These are things you would not normally know or hear about. I feel I got an advance class in Masonic symbolisms. Also of interest was to see the openness of the craft to all races and religions, I say this as I observed our Muslims' brethren listening intently to the Rabbi when he was reading from the Volume of the Sacred Law. Nowhere else in the world will you see this without causing dissent.

It was quite interesting looking around the room catching everyone’s expressions and actions. What I found particularly interesting was the Entered Apprentices' were watching the Fellowcraft Masons and the Fellowcraft Masons were watching the Master Masons on what to do next. It was quite amusing.

I quite enjoyed the fellowship with other Fellowcrafts and Entered Apprentices when we were made to retire and we discussed the brief experiences we have had in the craft. Re-entering the lodge was also a good experience.

Definitely this is one event that will forever be etched in my memory and will be sharing to future members of the craft."

The lodges/districts who invited the team for year 2008 are as follows: Lodge Sydney St George, Lodge Alpha No 970, the Lodges that meets at the Bondi Masonic Centre and Lodge Theo Gray No 234 at 286 Princes Highway Bulli NSW 2516. Definite schedule are still under negotiations with the invitees.

The Filipino Exemplification team started in the early days of the Club as a way of Masonically educating the Australian raised brethren. First exemplified were the opening and closing of the three degrees. But the most popular by far is the 3rd Degree Raising, as this has no exact equivalent in the Australian lodges.

Lodge Alpha No 970 Installation: 9 May

Incoming Junior Warden (elect), Bro Manny Santos; invites the brethren and their ladies of the Fil Masons on the Installation of Officers of Lodge Alpha No 970 at the the Blacktown Masonic Centre, 30 First Avenue, Blacktown NSW 2148 on 9 May 2008. Tyling is at 6:30 PM for visitors.

Other incoming officers, who are also members of Fil Masons NSW are: Bro Carlo San Juan, Senior Deacon elect and Bro Sherwin Lim, Junior Deacon elect.

The sitting Worshipful Master is also a member of the Club, WBro Vince Flores.

Easter Outing 2008

The rain has not dampened the FilMasons' Easter Outing and meeting at WBro Jack and Sis Elvie Sta Maria's Mannering Park holiday house (background of photo above).

First to arrive on Saturday was Bro Mario and Sis Irene, who got the "first prize" of selecting their own bedroom. Followed by VWBro Manny, Sis Remy and son Joseph. Then by President & First Lady, VWBro Fidel and Sis Pen. Late to arrive (around 9:00 PM), were Bro Manny S and Sis Odeng, who has to work that day. While Bro Butch and Sis Jean, arrived Sunday afternoon.

After Saturday's lunch, VWBro Fidel, VWBro Manny and WBro Jack and the ladies accompanied VWBro Manny's son; Joseph for a round of nine-hole golf, while others took a much needed rest and nap.

The brethren and the ladies at the deck, by this time the weather cleared.

Sis Irene, Sis Elvie, Sis Odeng, Sis Remy and Sis Pen with Pres Fidel, munching the spicy "dilis" pulutan.

After Saturday's dinner, some of the ladies watched TV and talked while most of brethren partook some beer, wine, scotch and the favorite drink of the night: Tequila. The Club's first "midnight meeting" was held and was over at 1:15 AM Sunday! The brethren and some of the ladies could not help but wait for Easter Sunday.

Easter Sunday morning walk: Bro Mario, Bro Fidel, Bro Manny S, Bro Manny M and Bro Jack.

After a sumptous Easter Sunday breakfast, most of group went to play golf, some went sightseeing of the surrounding areas and the Hunter Valley Vineyards.

Most went home after lunch to join with other family members for Easter Sunday. While Bro Butch and Sis Jean turned up to keep the Sta Maria's company till Easter Monday.

Another happy Easter Outing, and according to the Sta Maria's this is the first of the many open invitation to their holiday cum-retirement house.
